This wine is undoubtedly big, and sure to evolve handsomely in the bottle over the next 5-10 years.

The grapes that made this wine were grown in an east-facing hillside Howell Mountain vineyard perched 2100 feet above the Napa Valley floor. The terraced vineyard is planted on an extreme slope, producing thick-skinned clusters capable of creating a wine with intensity, structure, elegance, and weight. Notwithstanding the curious 2010 growing season, the merlot was picked at 27 Brix, with the cabernet picked 3 weeks later at 26 Brix.

Black List

2012 Moone-Tsai Black List V Red Wine (Sold Out)

This arresting (50/50) combination of Cabernet Franc and Merlot delivers one of our more intriguing Black List wines...in a fashion that is at once true, but also challenging to its origin...among the classic Bordeaux blends. While its nose suggests a loamy freshness and black fruit, the wine's palette opens with ripe dark cherries, black tea and earthiness, revealing a lightly chiseled muscularity. Bold, but beguiling, brawny, yet feminine; the wine breathlessly pads from its aromatic invitation...to display an unblinking attitude* of directness and conviction. Aged 24 months in 50% new French oak, the powdery tannins and delicate oak provide the wine with noticeable length and an uplifting finish.

*Author's note: As an analogy, consider the role of Trinity (played Carrie-Anne Moss) in the iconic film "The Matrix", or Sinead O'Connor's rendition of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U"

The fruit for this remarkable wine comes from specifically designated rows amidst vineyard blocks in the Soda Canyon district, and found in Pritchard Hill's red volcanic soils at the mouth of the Foss Valley, overlooking Napa Valley, with a southerly view of San Francisco Bay.

2011 Moone-Tsai Black List III (Sold Out)

The belated release of Black List-3 (postponed until after the release of Black List-4) represents our first encounter with the coquettish cab franc … which we’ve elected to pair with a distinguished cabernet sauvignon backbone. In classic cab-franc fashion, the aromas of this tantalizingly fresh combination of red cherry and delicate pipe smoke give way to vibrant cassis flavors, accented by white pepper, eucalyptus, and cocoa. Smooth tannins and delicate oak complete the wine handsomely, providing the wine with a satisfying length and notable finish.

Using prized cabernets from specially designated rows amidst vineyard blocks found in Coombsville and the rugged slopes of Atlas Peak (1800 ft. elevation); Black List-3 amply demonstrates the delicate balance between fruit expression and natural acidity that comes from these two distinct districts characterized by their curiously cooler climate, and layered soils of cobbled loams and volcanic ash.

Vineyards:Coombsville District, Atlas Peak

2011 Moone-Tsai Black List IV (Sold Out)

Our Black List-4 arrives with an unexpected calling card; …catching the unsuspecting with a provocative nose of ripe blackberry amidst its inky purple swirl. In the mouth, black cherry/kirsch flavors are accented by hints of black tea, black olive and sage. With an oak regimen that lifts the wine through a notable mid-palate, the wine shows lovely length … through to a satisfying finish. Together with its pleasing palate weight, good acidity, and fine-grained tannins, this proprietary blend is at once flirtatious, but spirited. Katy Perry meeting John Wayne may come to mind; but we’ll leave this to your palate and imagination.

The fruit for this two barrel-production is sourced from two vineyard blocks, each located at near opposite ends of Napa Valley. While the Cabernet backbone of this blend comes from a small parcel located on the northwest edge of Coombsville, its Petit Verdot counterpart is found amidst the rocky, well-drained soils of Dutch Henry Canyon… where the vines send their roots far, wide and deep to find the necessary nutrients and water. The stones aid the vineyard, absorbing the sun's heat during the day and radiating the heat during the night to protect the vines during frost season and help ripen the fruit.

Varietal Composition:67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Petit Verdot
Vineyards:Coombsville District, Calistoga

Harvest Date:October 26 - November 2, 2011

2010 Moone-Tsai Black List I (Sold Out)

The nose of our inaugural Black List wine opens with floral notes, and hints of dark fruit, and pipe smoke. In the mouth, this tease gives way to a tantalizing blend of ripe blueberry, wild strawberry, and a touch of licorice. With its pleasing palate weight, light acidity and refined tannins, the wine is both juicy and big, while delivering notable length and a powerful finish.

Using prized cabernet from specially designated rows amidst some of Philippe's favorite Coombsville vineyard blocks found in Caldwell Vineyard's venerable Block-18; Black List-I nobly demonstrates the delicate balance between fruit expression and natural acidity that comes from this distinct region characterized by its curiously cooler climate, and layered soils of cobbled loams and volcanic ash. With only 51 cases made, Black List-I represents the most limited production wine in the Moone-Tsai portfolio and is available to Black List members on an exclusive basis.

2010 Moone-Tsai Black List II (Sold Out)

On the heels of Black List-1, its bold, brooding predecessor; Black List-2 is a refined, graceful cabernet – whose ethereal aromas tease with notes of dark red fruits and earthy all-spice. While the wine’s initial mouth takes its time to unfold (decanting 30 minutes is suggested), patience will enjoy its reward …and will allow for the wine to slowly reveal itself with notes of Bing cherry, dried cranberry, and hints of clove, graphite and minerality. Delicately framed by oak and with its understated tannins, the wine’s bearing is subtle, and closes with a gentle, pleasing finish.

The fruit for this two barrel-production is sourced from a small vineyard block located near the southern-most tip of the ridge that forms the western boundary of the Atlas Peak AVA, close to the head of Soda Canyon. This specific site is a hybrid between the appellations that it borders …comprised of rocky volcanic soils endemic to Atlas Peak, and the deeper more fertile soils of its Oak Knoll neighbor. Located above the fog line, the region enjoys a microclimate characterized by cool days, warmer nights and a more uniform ripening period …encouraging the production of truly outstanding fruit.
