Cor Leonis
  • 2010 Moone-Tsai Cor Leonis Cabernet Sauvignon (Sold Out)

This remarkable cabernet in its especially limited production quantities, receives our Cor Leonis designation, to mark its position as the very "best of our best" wines that we produce. Transfixed by the brightest star in the constellation Leo, the Romans dubbed it Cor Leonis, the "Heart of the Lion."

Bearing an extraordinary combination of fruit from a trifecta of Napa Valley's most celebrated districts, our 2010 Cor Leonis Cabernet is the hallmark of our winemaking philosophy. The wine's nose entices with aromas of blackberry and spice. In the mouth, these give way to layers of rich, ripe black fruits that are subtly nuanced with minerality and clove. Twenty six months of aging in 90% new French oak provides elegant framing for this wine's concentration and intensity. With its seamless integration of sweet tannins, the wine is voluptuous on the palate, and delivers a sustained finish accented by cinnamon and dark chocolate.

This richly expressive wine draws its prized fruit from Oakville's heralded To Kalon Vineyard, Pritchard Hill, and Caldwell Vineyard's legendary Block-15 - whose vines have flourished in the rocky, volcanic soils of the heralded Coombsville District for over 30 years. The clone of Cabernet grown on this vineyard is prized for its complexity and depth, and the company of wines sourced from this vineyard is noteworthy.

The backbone of this richly expressive wine draws from Caldwell Vineyard's legendary Block-15 – whose vines have flourished in the rocky, volcanic soils of the heralded Coombsville District for over 30 years. In addition to this noble Coombsville fruit, the grapes that produced this singular wine were sourced from the heralded To Kalon vineyard and a westward-facing hillside vineyard on Pritchard Hill. • 2008 Moone-Tsai Cor Leonis Cabernet Sauvignon (Sold Out)

This expressive Cabernet opens with tightly layered aromas of ripe black currant and rich leather. Concentrated flavors of sweet pipe smoke, dark fruit, and allspice sustain throughout the extensive finish. This wine will continue to evolve in the bottle for many years.

In addition to our Coombsville site, the grapes that produced this singular wine were sourced from a vineyard on the Valley's famed Pritchard Hill. Dominating factors in this growing region are the rocky, volcanic soils and the characteristic warm, dry days of the mid and late growing season, both of which forge a distinct taste of place in the grapes and resulting wines. The western-facing vineyard is situated above the fog line, meaning the entire vineyard bathes in sunshine from sunrise to sunset throughout the growing season.

Our 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of ripe black-fruit and tobacco. The mouth is expansive and expressive with layered flavors suggesting chocolate-covered cherries, ripe plum, and espresso. With its substantive, yet finely grained tannins, and 24-months of aging in fine French oak; the wine is densely flavored and powerful, and delivers a seductively long finish of berries and pipe smoke.

Much of this Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from the Caldwell Vineyard in Coombsville, an area of southeast Napa Valley where soils are characterized by a unique blend of red volcanic soils and clay. The vineyard is planted on a gently sloping plateau, and the comparatively temperate climate of the area, versus the warmer territory up valley, serves to lengthen the growing season. The grapes are allowed to achieve full physiological ripeness without the pressure of heat extremes common in warmer areas, and low vigor soils throughout the vineyard create small, dense clusters. The resulting wine is opulent and expressive.
